As Sunderland developed the structure of the town changed with the creation of Townships and Parishes. Each had their boundaries defined by the centre lines of the streets between adjacent Townships or Parishes. This meant that residents in those streets could be found in either of them. With no street index until the Ward structure evolved, finding an address requires some diligence.
